F.A.Qs.

Can Ramadan fall twice a year?
Ramadan is likely to occur twice in the year 2030, owing to differences between the Gregorian and the Hijri calendar, “The Hijri year differs from the Gregorian year by about 11 days, and this means; after every 33 years, Ramadan is repeated twice once a year,”  said Dr. Sobeih Al Saadi, an astronomer.

Why is Ramadan only 30 days?
Since the Islamic calendar adheres to the lunar calendar of 12 months rather than the Gregorian calendar, a solar calendar used in the Western part of the globe, every month starts as the new crescent moon emerges. It continues for 29 or 30 days.

How old is Ramadan?
Origin of Ramadan
Muslims believe that in A.D. 610, the angel Jibril A.S. appeared to Prophet Muhammed PBUH and revealed to him the Quran, the Islamic holy book. That revelation, Laylat Al-Qadar—or the “Night of Power”—is believed to have occurred during Ramadan.

Why do Muslims fast?
The act of fasting is meant to remind Muslims of the less fortunate and to reinforce the need to be thankful. As one of the five pillars of Islam, fasting during the month of Ramadan is one of them, and mandatory for all healthy men and eligible women & teenagers (boys & girls) as well.

At what age do Muslims fast?
Children are not obliged to fast until they are about 11 or 12 years old. From an early age, however, they join the celebratory meals in the evenings, and they watch adults around them fasting through the day. In most families, children aged 6 or 7 want to be able to fast.

Can a 15-year-old do Ramadan?
If a child does not begin puberty, then by the age of 15, fasting becomes required for them, said by Shaykh Abdul Nasir, and scholars also generally agree with that.

Can a 13-year-old break his fast?
Fasting is obligatory upon individuals once they reach puberty, regardless of age. Once they reach puberty, they are considered adults of their own free will and they cannot be forced to do anything they don't want to.

Can a girl fast on her period?
However, when a girl/woman is menstruating, she cannot fast. But despite this, some women feel they cannot be open about their periods with male members of their family, so they can show off as if they are fasting and try to have food in privacy.

Is Haram to fast while traveling?

In the Quran, Allah says that you are exempt from fasting while traveling because He does not wish to make it difficult for you. But if you are capable and good enough to bear it easily, then go with fasting; because you will never ever get back that one day of Ramadan fasting even if you keep fasting for your whole life except Ramadan.

What breaks your fast in Islam?
Intentional eating and drinking, intentional vomiting, sexual intimacy between a married couple and vitamin injections, all these break a Muslim's fast.

Is it haraam to touch a girl while fasting?
It is haraam (forbidden) for a man to touch the hand of a girl who is not his mahram (spouse) because the Prophet Muhammed (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “For one of you to be stabbed in the head with an iron needle is better for him than for him to touch a woman who is not permissible for him.”

Does chewing gum break a fast?
Gum contains calories
For stricter forms of fasting like water fasts, consuming any calories technically breaks your fast.

Does kissing someone break your fast?
Kissing your partner (spouse) whilst fasting does not invalidate your fast but it is advised to refrain from kissing your spouse with desire during fasting hours as Muslims must abstain from food, drink, and sex with their spouse while fasting. You can only have sex or any intimate contact must be done before or after the hours of fasting with your spouse.

Can I lip-kiss my GF during Ramadan?
No, as GF is prohibited/ not allowed in Islam.
